Hawaii DMV Fee Calculator
Estimate your annual registration fees based on vehicle weight and county.
The State and County both apply a tax based on vehicle weight.
Why Vehicle Registration Fees in Hawaii Are Different
Hawaii doesn’t follow a flat registration fee system. Instead, the total cost depends on a mix of state and county taxes, along with a few one-time or situational charges.
Here’s what goes into the calculation:
- State Registration Fee: $45.00 (standard for all vehicles).
- Beautification Fee: $1.00 (applies statewide).
- State Weight Tax: $0.0175 per pound of your vehicle’s net weight.
- County Weight Tax: Varies depending on your county:
- Honolulu: $0.0250 per pound
- Maui: $0.0200 per pound
- Hawaii (Big Island): $0.0200 per pound
- Kauai: $0.0210 per pound
- Optional / Situational Fees:
- New License Plate & Emblem: $5.50 (one-time when you get new plates).
- Electric Vehicle Surcharge: $50.00 (applies to EVs each year).
That means your registration is based not just on a flat fee, but also on how heavy your vehicle is and where you live.
How the Hawaii Registration Fee Calculator Works
The calculator makes this simple. Here’s how you use it:
- Enter Vehicle Weight: Type in the net weight of your car in pounds (e.g., 3,500 lbs).
- Choose Your County: Select your county from the dropdown menu.
- Check Additional Fees (if they apply):
- New plate fee if you’re getting new license plates.
- EV surcharge if you own an electric car.
- Click Calculate: You’ll see a detailed breakdown of each charge plus your total annual estimate.
For example, a 3,500-pound car registered in Honolulu might show:
- State Registration Fee: $45.00
- State Weight Tax: $61.25
- County Weight Tax (Honolulu): $87.50
- Beautification Fee: $1.00
- Total Annual Estimate: $194.75
If it’s an electric car, the $50 surcharge would bring the total to $244.75.
Benefits of Using the Calculator
- Saves Time: No need to search through DMV tables or guess.
- Clear Breakdown: See exactly where your money goes.
- Budget-Friendly: Helps you plan for car expenses in advance.
- Accurate to Your County: Takes into account Hawaii’s county-specific rates.
It’s especially useful if you’re moving counties, buying a new car, or comparing costs for different vehicles.
Important Notes
- This tool gives an estimate. Your final bill from the DMV may include other one-time fees, like the title transfer fee or safety inspection.
- The new plate fee is only charged when you first get plates, not every year.
- The electric vehicle surcharge is an annual fee.
