Nevada DMV Fee Calculator

Estimate your annual registration and Governmental Services Tax (GST).

This is the basis for the Governmental Services Tax.

The GST depreciates with vehicle age.

This determines the base annual registration fee.

Some counties have a Supplemental GST.

Why Nevada Registration Fees Are Complicated

Unlike many states, Nevada doesn’t just charge a flat registration fee. Instead, it combines several factors:

  • Vehicle MSRP (Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price): This is the base value used to calculate the annual Governmental Services Tax (GST).
  • Vehicle Age: The older your car, the lower its taxable value due to depreciation.
  • Vehicle Weight: Heavier vehicles pay higher base registration fees.
  • County of Residence: Some counties charge an extra Supplemental Governmental Services Tax (SGST).
  • One-Time Fees: If you’re buying a new vehicle, you may also pay for a title fee or lien fee (if financed).

The combination of these makes Nevada’s system unique—and sometimes confusing.

Key Components of Nevada Registration Fees

To understand what the calculator shows, here’s a breakdown of each fee:

1. Governmental Services Tax (GST)

  • Calculated at 4% of the depreciated MSRP.
  • Depreciation depends on vehicle age. For example:
    • New: 100% of MSRP
    • 3 years old: 70% of MSRP
    • 9+ years old: 15% of MSRP (minimum taxable value = $500).

2. Supplemental Governmental Services Tax (SGST)

  • An extra 1% tax applied in certain counties, such as Clark and Churchill.

3. Weight-Based Registration Fee

  • Light cars (under 3,500 lbs): $33.00
  • Medium cars (3,501–4,500 lbs): $38.00
  • Heavy trucks (10,001+ lbs): $72.00

4. Technology & Prison Plate Fees

  • Technology Fee: $1.00 annually
  • Prison Plate Fee: $1.00 annually

5. One-Time Fees (for new purchases only)

  • Title Fee: $28.25
  • Lien Fee: $20.00 (if financed)

How the Nevada Car Registration Fee Calculator Works

The online calculator uses these inputs to estimate your total:

  1. Enter your vehicle’s original MSRP.
  2. Select the age of the vehicle from the dropdown menu.
  3. Choose your vehicle’s weight range.
  4. Select your county of residence.
  5. Check boxes for one-time fees (title or lien) if they apply.

When you hit Calculate, the tool gives you:

  • A detailed breakdown of GST, SGST, registration fee, and other charges.
  • A total estimated cost for your registration.
  • A note on recurring vs. one-time fees, so you know what you’ll pay each year versus only at purchase.

Example Calculation

Let’s say you’re registering a car in Clark County:

  • MSRP: $35,000
  • Vehicle Age: 2 years old (80% factor)
  • Weight: 4,200 lbs
  • County: Clark (SGST applies)

The calculator will estimate:

  • GST: $35,000 × 0.8 × 0.04 = $1,120.00
  • SGST: $35,000 × 0.8 × 0.01 = $280.00
  • Registration Fee (weight): $38.00
  • Technology Fee: $1.00
  • Prison Plate Fee: $1.00
  • Total: $1,440.00

If you add the title fee and lien fee, the total rises accordingly.
