Functions of Fuel Injectors
The primary function of fuel injectors is to introduce fuel into the engine in a controlled and precise manner. When the engine control unit (ECU) determines that fuel is needed, it sends an electrical signal to the fuel injector, causing it to open for a brief period.
During this time, pressurized fuel is sprayed into the combustion chamber or intake manifold in a fine mist, ensuring that the fuel mixes thoroughly with air for efficient combustion.
Unlike older carburetor systems, which relied on vacuum pressure to pull fuel into the engine, fuel injectors deliver fuel with precise timing and amount. This precision allows modern engines to maintain better fuel efficiency and reduce harmful emissions, all while improving overall engine performance.
Types of Fuel Injectors
There are several types of fuel injectors, each serving specific engine configurations and performance needs:
- Port Fuel Injectors: These are the most common type of fuel injector, spraying fuel directly into the intake manifold, just before the intake valve. Port fuel injectors provide good fuel atomization and are typically found in many gasoline engines.
- Direct Fuel Injectors: Found in more modern, high-performance, or fuel-efficient engines, direct injectors spray fuel directly into the combustion chamber itself. This allows for even more precise control over fuel delivery and enables greater power and fuel efficiency. Direct fuel injection systems are especially common in diesel engines and increasingly popular in gasoline engines as well.
- Sequential Fuel Injectors: These injectors deliver fuel to each cylinder individually, based on the engine’s firing order. This method provides better fuel control compared to batch fuel injection systems, which spray fuel into all cylinders at once.
