New Hampshire DMV Fee Calculator

Estimate your annual Town Permit Fee and State Registration Fee. Note: New Hampshire does not have a sales tax on vehicles.

This is the basis for the annual Town/City Permit Fee.

The Town Permit Fee rate decreases as the vehicle ages.

This determines the annual State Registration Fee.

What is the New Hampshire Car Registration Fee Calculator?

The New Hampshire DMV Fee Calculator is an online tool that estimates:

  • Annual Town/City Permit Fee
  • Annual State Registration Fee
  • One-time fees like title applications or license plates

By entering a few details about your vehicle—such as MSRP, age, and weight—you’ll get an itemized breakdown of costs. This helps car owners avoid surprises at registration time.

How the Calculator Works

The calculator uses three main factors:

1. Vehicle Original MSRP (Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price)

  • This is the base price of the car when it was new.
  • The Town/City Permit Fee is calculated as a percentage of this MSRP.
  • The percentage decreases as the car gets older.

2. Vehicle Model Year (Age of the Car)

  • New cars (current year) are charged at the highest rate: $18 per $1,000 of MSRP.
  • The rate drops as the vehicle ages:
    • 1-year-old: $15 per $1,000
    • 2 years: $12 per $1,000
    • 3 years: $9 per $1,000
    • 4 years: $6 per $1,000
    • 5+ years: $3 per $1,000

This sliding scale makes older vehicles cheaper to register.

3. Vehicle Weight (Gross Weight in pounds)

  • Determines the State Registration Fee, which is charged annually:
    • 0 – 3,000 lbs: $31.20
    • 3,001 – 5,000 lbs: $43.20
    • 5,001 – 8,000 lbs: $55.20
    • 8,001 – 12,000 lbs: $67.20

4. Optional One-Time Fees (For New Registrations)

  • Title Application Fee: $25
  • License Plate Fee: $8

Example Calculation

Let’s say you bought a car with:

  • MSRP of $38,500
  • Model year: 2 years old
  • Weight: 3,800 lbs

Here’s the breakdown:

  • Town Permit Fee = ($38,500 ÷ 1,000) × $12 = $462.00
  • State Registration Fee = $43.20
  • Title Fee = $25.00 (if checked)
  • Plate Fee = $8.00 (if checked)

Estimated Total = $538.20 (without one-time fees) or $571.20 (with title + plate fees)

Why Use the Calculator?

  • Saves time: No guessing or waiting until the DMV counter to know your costs.
  • Budget-friendly: Helps car buyers and owners prepare for yearly expenses.
  • Transparent: Provides a clear breakdown of recurring vs. one-time fees.

Things to Keep in Mind

  • The calculator provides estimates only. Official fees may vary slightly depending on your town or DMV office.
  • One-time fees apply only during the first registration of a vehicle.
  • Town/City Permit Fee and State Registration Fee are annual charges you’ll pay every year.
