What Is Piston Compression Height?
Compression height is the distance from the center of the wrist pin (also called the gudgeon pin) to the top of the piston crown.
It determines how the piston sits in the cylinder when it reaches Top Dead Center (TDC).
If compression height is:
- Too tall → piston may stick out of the block
- Too short → piston sits too far down in the cylinder
- Correct → proper deck clearance and compression ratio

Measured center-to-center.
4. Deck Height

Example Calculation
Let’s use sample values:
- Block Height: 228.6 mm
- Crank Stroke: 86 mm

Calculation:
Compression Height = (228.6 ÷ 2) − 86 + 150 − 0
Compression Height = 114.3 − 86 + 150
Compression Height = 178.3 mm
